What the Mysterious ‘E’ on Old Gear Sticks Means

Drivers familiar with modern manual transmissions usually expect a straightforward pattern showing reverse and gears one through five or six. That is why discovering an old gear stick marked R, 1, 2, 3, 4 and E can be confusing. At first glance, the mysterious “E” looks as though it might simply be an unusual substitute for fifth gear, but its meaning is more specific.

On certain older vehicles, E stands for “Economy.” It identifies a high-ratio gear intended primarily for economical cruising rather than acceleration. Once the vehicle was traveling at a suitable speed, selecting E allowed the engine to run at lower revolutions while maintaining road speed.

In practical terms, E performed a role similar to an overdrive or particularly tall top gear. Lower engine RPM could reduce fuel consumption, engine noise, and mechanical wear during long stretches of steady driving. It wasn’t designed to provide stronger acceleration, which is why a driver would normally shift back into a lower numbered gear when additional power was needed.

Manufacturers used different terminology and transmission layouts over the years, so an E marking was never universal across all manual cars. Depending on the particular vehicle, similar fuel-saving arrangements could instead be labeled overdrive or simply appear as an ordinary fifth gear.

So the unusual letter isn’t a secret driving mode that modern motorists somehow forgot. On gearboxes that used this designation, the “E” meant Economy—a tall cruising gear designed to help the vehicle travel efficiently at speed. It is a small reminder of how manufacturers were thinking about fuel economy long before today’s electronic driving modes appeared.
