I Promised My Best Friend We’d Go to Prom

When I was six, I made a promise to my best friend, Noah, that one day we would go to prom together. Noah had Down syndrome, and even as children he understood that some people treated him differently. I never understood why. He was the boy who shared his snacks with me, carried my backpack when I was tired, and made me laugh harder than anyone else. So when he asked, “Will you dance with me at prom when we’re big?” I pinky-promised that I would.

Twelve years later, prom night finally arrived. I had bought a dark green dress, and Noah had spent weeks practicing how to tie his burgundy tie. But just as I started getting ready, Mom walked into my bedroom, closed the door, and locked it behind her. Her eyes were already filled with tears. “Before you leave tonight,” she said, “there’s something about Noah you need to know.”

She handed me an envelope that had been hidden in her dresser for years. Inside was a letter from Noah’s mother explaining that when we were little, doctors had discovered a serious heart condition that could eventually require major surgery. Our parents had decided not to burden two children with that fear. Noah had undergone several procedures over the years, but he had never told me how serious things had become because he was terrified I would treat him differently or cancel our promise out of sympathy.

Then Mom told me the part that shattered me: Noah was scheduled for another major heart operation the following week. He had begged everyone not to tell me until prom because all he wanted was one completely normal night with his best friend. I cried until my makeup was ruined, fixed it again, and went downstairs. Noah was standing there in his suit, nervous and smiling, completely unaware that I finally knew everything.

That night, I kept the promise we had made at six years old. We walked into prom together, took the photograph we had talked about for twelve years, and danced until the final song. The following week, Noah underwent his surgery and survived. Months later, he placed our prom photograph beside the childhood picture of us hugging on my front porch. Our promise had never really been about prom—it was about growing up side by side, and after twelve years, we finally understood how much keeping it meant.
