I ordered a pizza in the evening expecting nothing more than a quick, ordinary dinner. The delivery driver handed me the box, I carried it into the kitchen, and everything seemed completely normal. But the moment I lifted the lid, I stopped. Most of the pizza was covered with strange grayish, oval-shaped objects that I had definitely never ordered.

At first, I couldn’t even tell whether they were supposed to be food. They looked swollen and oddly textured, almost like small potatoes or pieces of meat wrapped in a thin membrane. One normal pepperoni slice remained visible on the side, making everything else in the box look even stranger by comparison.

I sat there staring at it instead of eating. I wondered whether the restaurant had accidentally given me somebody else’s unusual order or whether something had somehow contaminated the pizza before it reached me. Whatever those objects were, I wasn’t willing to taste one just to find out.

After contacting the restaurant and sending them a picture, I finally received an explanation. The strange pieces were cooked beef kidneys that had been prepared for a specialty organ-meat pizza. An employee had mixed up two orders during a busy evening and placed the kidney pizza in my delivery box while my pepperoni order went to another customer.

The restaurant apologized and replaced the entire order. So there was no mysterious creature hiding inside the pizza and nothing had grown on it during delivery—the unusual objects were simply beef kidneys from a completely different specialty order. I was relieved to finally know what I had been staring at, although I certainly didn’t eat that pizza.
