My Mother Crocheted My Child a Toy Before She Was Born

My mother spent months crocheting a special toy for my unborn daughter. Every stitch was made with love, and she proudly handed it to me just days before I gave birth. Two weeks before my due date, however, I had to place my mother in a nursing home after her health suddenly declined. It was one of the hardest decisions I had ever made.

After my daughter was born, the handmade toy became a treasured keepsake. I kept it close, not only because it was beautiful, but because it reminded me of my mother and the bond we shared. My husband never understood my attachment. One day, during an argument, he accused me of treating the toy as if it were my mother herself and, in a fit of anger, destroyed it.

His actions devastated me. Although I tried to forgive him, something between us changed forever. Three years later, our marriage ended, and we went our separate ways. I focused on raising my daughter and rebuilding our lives.

Last week, my daughter came home from school in tears. Through sobs, she explained that another child had mocked her for not having a special toy made by a grandparent like many of her classmates did. Hearing those words brought back memories I had tried to bury.

That evening, I visited my mother at the nursing home and told her what had happened. Despite her frailty, she smiled and asked for yarn and crochet hooks. Over the next several weeks, she lovingly created a new toy for her granddaughter. When my daughter received it, she hugged her grandmother tightly, creating a memory that all three generations will cherish forever.
